eMine Evaluation Survey

Introduction

This study evaluates the results of a segmentation algorithm which was developed as part of the eMine project. This algorithm takes a web page and divides into a number of visual blocks. Brief information about this algorithm can be found in our summary of segmentation algorithm page.

Do I need technical information about web design to take part?

No. Different levels of expertise (event if you have no experience in web design and concepts) are welcome. Please read the instructions carefully and feel free to contact us if you are not familiar with the terminology.

What will I have to do if I take part?

In this survey, you will be shown nine randomly selected web pages which are selected among the most popular pages. First of all, you will be given five levels of segmentation results of a page and you will be asked to rank the blocks between '1' and '5' where '1' indicating that segmentation process was very unsuccessful and '5' indicating that segmentation process was very successful. Then, you will select the segmentation level which you think is the most suitable level for dividing the page into blocks. After you select a level, you will be asked to specify the role of the blocks in that particular level.

You will be given the links to the pages so that you can analyze the visual structure, DOM structure and CSS styles of the page.

Will my data be anonymous?

Yes. Names/identity will not be collected. Instead, each participant is allocated a number to identify his or her data. Names/identity will not be associated with this number in anyway.

Do I have to take part?

You do not have to take part in the study. If you decide to take part and then later change your mind, either before you start the study or during it, you can withdraw without giving your reasons, and, if you wish, your data will be destroyed.
